2017 Spring Flood Forecast

Posted: March 2, 2017

2017 Spring Flood Forecast

The Province of Manitoba has issued a flood forecast for the Red River Valley including the Rural Municipality of East St. Paul.  The flood forecast indicates well above soil moisture conditions, above normal precipitation and river levels higher than normal.  When the Red River reaches an elevation of 21 feet at James Avenue, low lying areas along the Red River have the potential for flooding.  The combination of above moisture conditions and higher than normal river levels may result in the Red River reaching levels of 22 feet at James Avenue in Winnipeg.

East St. Paul has commenced with flood preparations based on the provincial flood forecast.  The municipality is purchasing additional large diameter flood tubes, started the production of sandbags, serviced all flood fighting equipment and ensuring the required inventory of outfall plugs and large volume pumps are in place.

The municipality is building up its reserve of sandbags and at this time will not be distributing sandbags to residents unless homes are threatened by high water conditions or a sudden thaw causing overland flooding.

Residents in the flood prone areas will be kept up to date on Red River conditions as the municipality receives them.  All major updates that may affect residents in low lying areas will have information hand delivered to their residence.

Please see all additional updates posted on the municipal website, e-mail, Twitter and Facebook social media accounts.

WARNING:

Please ensure all children and pets stay away from the Red River, creeks and municipal drains due to open water, fast moving water and weak ice conditions.
