The RM of East St. Paul will be raising a Peace Flag on Friday, Sept. 9 at 9:00 a.m. at the RM office to support the seventh annual Festival of Peace and Compassion, which runs throughout Winnipeg from Sept. 11 to 25.
East St. Paul Mayor Shelley Hart said council passed a resolution at its Aug. 23 meeting to raise a Peace Flag along with other cities and municipalities across the province to mark the launch of Peace Days.
"East St. Paul is proud to join other Manitoba communities, marking the official launch of the 7th annual Peace Days Festival," said Mayor Shelley Hart. "Our goal this year is to raise awareness and encourage participation in Peace Days events."
Peace Days began in 2010 and was inspired by Rotary World Peace Partners as a way to celebrate the United Nations International Day of Peace, which is Sept. 21 each year.
The City of Winnipeg held a Concert for Peace that year and the celebration has now grown to a week-long festival that encompasses numerous community events celebrating the International Day of Peace and promoting a culture of peace and compassion.
