Fire Prevention Week October 4th to 10th - Tip 2

Posted: October 6, 2020

This is fire prevention week.  The theme this year is:

"Serve up fire safety in the kitchen”

Did you know that cooking is the number #1 cause of home fire and home fire injuries?

Today’s safety tips deal with what to do if you have a cooking fire:

  • If the fire is well involved just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.
  • Call 9-1-1 after you leave.
  • If you try to fight the fire, be sure anyone else in the residence is getting out and you have a clear exit route.
  • Keep a lid nearby when you’re cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
  • Never throw water on a grease fire as it can cause the grease to splash and make matters worse.
  • For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.
  • If a fire starts in the microwave, turn it off, make sure the door is closed and unplug it if you can.

Pease contact the administration office if you have any questions and someone will get in touch with you.
