High Speed Internet service breaks ground in the Metro Region

Today, the Winnipeg Metropolitan Region and JohnQ Public Impact Inc. formally announced the phase one kick off of an innovative partnership that will bring high speed fibre optics to the Metro Region.

"This is a great day for municipalities in the Metro Region,” commented East St. Paul Mayor Shelley Hart.  "As leaders, we could no longer wait for our communities to have access to this essential service.  East St. Paul is one of the 12 founding members of JohnQ, an Economic Development Corporation established to provide a platform for private/public partnerships such as this.”

The six Phase One communities including the RM of Portage la Prairie, Headingley, Macdonald, Ritchot, Rockwood, and Stonewall were identified by a business case that ensures the sustainability and profitability of the project, allowing the network to then connect all communities across the Metro Region and beyond.  Each one of the "First Go” communities has contributed a repayable kick-start loan of $250,000.

John Q has partnered with RFNOW, a Manitoba Internet Service Provider based in Virden.  RFNOW is a leading-edge communications company that specializes in delivering fibre to residents, farms and businesses.

"This innovative project demonstrates that there are leaders in municipal government who are willing to take on the heavy lifting required of a collaborative project such as this,” commented Mayor Hart. "This is municipal leadership at the service of citizens.”
