Cenotaph dedication service at Royal Canadian Legion #215

L to R:  Councillors Duval and Posthumus, Deputy Mayor Horechko and Mayor Hart

This past Sunday, members of East St. Paul Council attended the cenotaph dedication service at the Royal Canadian Legion, Henderson Highway Branch 215. The cenotaph was looking for a new home when the former North Kildonan municipal office in Winnipeg became surplus and was sold.
Before the cenotaph was moved to the Legion, inscriptions were added honouring service after World War I and World War II including the Korean War, the War in Afghanistan and Peacekeepers.
The most memorable moment of the service came when World War II veterans, Fred Jackson (96 yrs) and Orville Marshall (98 yrs) laid a wreath at the foot of the cenotaph. Both veterans are members of the East St. Paul Legion.
Many elected officials attended the service including East St. Paul Mayor Shelley Hart, Deputy Mayor Orest Horechko, Councillor’s  Brian Duval and Charles Posthumus, MP Raquel Dancho, MLAs Jeff Wharton, Cathy Cox, and Jon Reyes and City of Winnipeg Councillor Jeff Browaty.
A special thank you and acknowledgement is extended to Councillor Browaty and Legion President Gord Machej for their collaborative efforts to ensure the North Kildonan cenotaph found a home where the service of our veterans will continue to be honoured.
