It's looking much brighter out there!

It's looking much brighter out there!

And we are not just talking about the increase in summer daylight hours!
Manitoba Hydro's LED Streetlight Conversion Program has been switching out our street lights from high pressure sodium (HPS) bulbs which cast a yellow light to LED bulbs.
The general benefits of switching to LED bulbs are longer life and therefore less maintenance, lower energy usage (between 40-75% less electricity than a HPS fixture), and better quality light (white vs yellow) that is more like daylight and improves safety.
Also HPS contains small quantities of mercury, a hazardous product.
This change will save us money in energy costs, is better for the environment and improves nighttime visibility.
Even though few of us will have HPS bulbs, LEDs are still a great option for all of us to consider for our homes and businesses as LEDs will generally use less electrical energy than incandescent or fluorescent bulbs.
In the coming months the RM is going to be evaluating its lighting systems in buildings to see where it makes sense to change bulbs out immediately or as they need replacement.
Even though our electricity emits no greenhouse gas emissions, changing over to LED bulbs in most instances is a more environmentally friendly route to go.  Consult with a local hardware store to see if this is a good option for your home or business.
