East St. Paul couple wins Best Home Grounds

East St. Paul residents Ben Wasylyshen and Evelyn Mitchell were presented with the Manitoba Good Roads Association Burgess Shield Award for Best Home Grounds in the Urban category, population 7,500-plus.
After joining other homeowners in East St. Paul's Communities in Bloom, the couple were asked if the RM could enter their Henderson Highway property in Manitoba Good Roads Association annual competition.
Wasylyshen says their almost two acre yard has taken a lot of work in the 12 years that they've lived there, but they've enjoyed it all.  He and Mitchell do all the yard work - save for the trimming of some 40-foot trees - and adhered to a philosophy that's proven successful.
"We have this concept to respect and nurture what exists and is good in the tree environment, then you build and work with that," Wasylyshen said.
They removed the "dead and dying", and complimented what remained with about 100 new trees, some of them rare for this area, including Catalpa trees from India and Honey Locust, which are common in southern Ontario, but not so much here.
Wasylyshen is proud to represent East St. Paul in any way he can.
"It's good for the municipality, it's positive news".
