Farmers Market ... Survey Says

Farmers Market … Survey Says

We asked and you told us!  Nearly 200 people took the time to provide their comments and feedback to our 2017 Farmers Market Survey. The number of suggestions and ideas we received was impressive.
As we near the 2018 opening day on July 1st, we wanted to share some of the key themes and comments we heard and what changes are in store.
First and foremost, many residents told us that they enjoy having a regular, community activity in East St. Paul.  "A wonderful venue to compliment the already fabulous area we call home! Cheers to East St. Paul! Well done!”
Overwhelmingly, the fresh produce is the main reason people attend the market.  "Best of all: We loved our weekly shopping for fresh produce from the variety of vendors.”
Last year we extended the market season, opening two weeks earlier and closing two weeks later. Fresh produce wasn’t available this early and because it is the main reason many people attend, we have adjusted our opening accordingly.  This year the market will open July 1st and close on September 16th.
We received comments that the loose gravel on the Farmers Market site caused mobility problems for those with wheelchairs, walkers and strollers.  East St. Paul staff has done an outstanding job of improving the surface.  They added approximately one inch of ¼” down limestone, raked it by hand, and then packed it.  You will find a marked difference in the smoothness of the surface.
We had many requests and suggestions for additional activities on site each Sunday including workshops, more kid’s activities and yoga. We have added more of these activities so keep an eye out on the schedule for them.  We also heard from some residents that the timing of special events conflicted with their church attendance as we usually had them at 10am when the market opened.  In response, we have moved the start time of these events later on in the afternoon.
Many people mentioned having food trucks at the market was important as it encouraged people to stay, visit and enjoy the weekly entertainment.  We had food trucks booked for every market but there were occasions when they were a no-show.  We already have a food truck reserved for every Sunday this year.  And, while you sit and enjoy your food and/or drink, we have table umbrellas being added this year.
Back by popular demand this season is sharpening vendor, By the Hand of Gord, so get your kitchen and garden implements ready.  We have new vendors already lined up and we are constantly looking to add more.
Lastly, we are welcoming a new market manager this year, Caryl Teja. Caryl has a background in agriculture and is familiar with other farmers markets within Manitoba. She is very eager and determined to help make the 2018 Farmers Market season a success.  If you would like to contact Caryl regarding any aspect of the market, you can do so via email at market@eaststpaul.com.
