Property crime is preventable!

Property crime is preventable!

With property crime being a crime of opportunity, over 95% of the thefts that occur in our area are a result of garages and sheds being left unlocked, vehicles left unlocked with keys in the ignition with valuables in plain sight.

The East St. Paul RCMP would like to provide some tips to the members of the community on how to reduce their risk of being a victim of property crime.

  • When staying inside or before leaving home, always ensure that the doors of your property, garage and shed are locked and secure.

  • Always lock your vehicle and do not leave the keys inside of it.

  • Do not leave any attractive items in plain sight.

  • Ensure adequate illumination outside to prevent hiding around your property.

  • Motion activated exterior lights and surveillance cameras on your property can be an effective deterrent (be aware that the lighting condition may affect the picture quality).

  • Keep trees trimmed to maximize eyewitness potential.

  • Have tools, bikes and lawn equipment in the shed or garage.

  • When you are away, don’t make it obvious!  Have a trusted friend or neighbour watch your house and pick up your newspapers and mail.

  • Maintain an inventory of your valuables with make, models and serial numbers.

  • Call police when you notice suspicious persons, vehicles or activities.

  • When witnessing a crime in progress, call 911 and provide as much detail as possible.

  • Do not confront or approach a suspect.

These tips do not guarantee that you will not be victimized.  They only draw attention to areas that, if corrected, will lower your chances being a victim of property crime.
