Nathaniel Shewchuk Blood Donor Clinic in East St. Paul May 18

Any time someone gives blood, there’s deep meaning, but a Blood Donor Clinic at the East St. Paul Recreation Centre on May 18 gives people the chance to donate in the name of a local teen that’s battled cancer and won.

Nathaniel Shewchuk was just 14 when he was diagnosed in January 2017 with a rare form of leukemia. Nathaniel had an extremely low platelet count and low hemoglobin and received several blood transfusions at the time. He went on to receive chemotherapy treatments and developed a blood infection. Nathaniel went into septic shock and multi-organ failure and needed to be airlifted to Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton and was placed on a heart and lung bypass machine.

Nathaniel received a life saving bone marrow transplant in September 2017, with his younger brother Liam being the donor. He is now cancer free, but during the course of his treatment Nathaniel received more than 100 blood products including blood, plasma and platelets. Along with chemotherapy, medications and surgery, the blood products played a crucial role in saving Nathaniel’s life.

We invite you to participate in the May 18 Blood Donor Clinic in Nathaniel’s name, and help make the clinic a success that will help save the lives of others in need of blood.  The Clinic runs from 3pm – 7pm at the Rec Centre at 260 Hoddinott Rd.
