East St. Paul raises Peace Flag

Mayor Shelley Hart, Interim CAO Rhiana Carlson, Coun. Brian Duval

The RM of East St. Paul raised a Peace Flag this morning at 10 am in recognition of the annual Festival of Peace and Compassion, which runs throughout Winnipeg from Sept. 15 to 24.

Cities and municipalities across the province raise Peace Flags to mark the launch of Peace Days. This is East St. Paul’s second year taking part.

Mayor Shelley Hart said the flag raising is a ‘symbolic gesture’ by many municipalities in support of Peace Days and we encourage residents to consider taking in one of the many events in and around Winnipeg.  For a list of events, click here.

Mayor Hart, along with Councillor Brian Duval and Interim CAO/Manager of Finance and Administration, Rhiana Carlson participated in the flag raising.

Peace Days began in 2010 and was inspired by Rotary World Peace Partners as a way to celebrate the United Nations International Day of Peace, which is Sept. 21 each year.

The City of Winnipeg held a Concert for Peace that year and the celebration has now grown to a week-plus long festival that will include a stimulating program of events throughout the city to appeal to all ages. For more information on Peace Days visit www.peacedays.ca
